Kidney Stones & Renal Calculi
Anyone can get a kidney stone, but some people are more likely than others to have them. Men get kidney stones more often than women do. Kidney stones are hard deposits of minerals and acid salts that stick together in concentrated urine. They can be painful when passing through the urinary tract, but usually don’t cause permanent damage.
The most common symptom is severe pain, usually in the side of the abdomen, that’s often associated with nausea. Manifestations vary according to the size, shape and position of the stone.
Most common complaint arising from renal calculi is an intermittent dull pain in the lower abdomen or back increased by movement or sudden jolt. When the stone transverses the ureter, it produces pain and bleeding.
Renal Calculi often have no definite, single cause, although several factors may increase your risk. Kidney stones form when your urine contains more crystal-forming substances such as calcium, oxalate and uric acid than the fluid in your urine can dilute. At the same time, your urine may lack substances that prevent crystals from sticking together, creating an ideal environment for kidney stones to form.
