Leprosy Or Hansen Disease

A chronic skin disease and scourge on mankind since ancient times, Leprosy, the very word raises fears in many people’s minds. It is a disease that has long been associated with uncleanness, with ostracism and with death. In Biblical times a sufferer was required by law to cry out “unclean, unclean” when in proximity to others. Centuries ago in England, a leper was considered to be officially dead and his property was seized. His house was often burned and he was cast out of the community. The word leprosy has, in fact, such a negative connotation to it that the ancient disease has been given a new name – Hansen’s Disease.

Leprosy is usually characterized by shining tubercles of various sizes, thickening of the skin, loss of feeling and ulceration and necrosis of parts. Leprosy is a contagious, chronic disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae, a rod-shaped bacterium. It is contagious and infectious. This disease is transmitted through droplets expelled by sneezes and coughs or by coming in contact with nasal fluids on surfaces.

Leprosy is a most disgusting and abominable disease which makes the patient repulsive and an outcast in human society. Although painless, yet it is a slow killer which horribly disfigures the face and the body and turns the human into loathsome creature shunned and hated by everybody.

Untreated, leprosy can cause progressive and permanent damage to the skin, nerves, limbs, and eyes. In 2017 there were 14 countries reporting new cases of leprosy. These were Bangladesh, Brazil, DR Congo, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Madagascar, Mozambique, Myanmar, Nepal, Nigeria, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Tanzania.

Leprosy affects some 13,000,000 people around the earth, most of them in Africa and Asia. About 100 people are diagnosed with leprosy in the U.S. every year.

The main symptom of leprosy is disfiguring skin sores, lumps, or bumps that do not go away after several weeks or months. The skin sores are pale-colored. It usually takes about 3 to 5 years for symptoms to appear after coming into contact with the leprosy-causing bacteria. Some people do not develop symptoms until twenty years later. The time between contact with the bacteria and the appearance of symptoms is called the incubation period. Leprosy’s long incubation period makes it very difficult for doctors to determine when and where a person with leprosy got infected.
