Migraine

A Migraine is a primary headache disorder characterized by recurrent headaches that are moderate to severe. It is usually so severe and throbbing and is associated with nausea, photophobia, pallor, sweating prostration which may necessitate the patient taking to bed in darkened room. One attack of Migraine leaves the patient weak for weeks and fully exhausted.

 

A victim of Migraine is unable to enjoy simple privileges offered in daily life, the patient can never attain full health and happiness in spite of the best possible food and other facilities. A sufferer of this malady can hardly claim to be healthy despite possessing good physique and can never enjoy life in true sense of the term. 

 

Generally these headaches affect one half of the head, and last from a few hours to few days.[ Migraine is a neurological condition that can cause multiple symptoms, besides intense, debilitating headaches, its symptoms also includes nausea, vomiting, difficulty in speaking, numbness or tingling, and sensitivity to light and sound. Migraines often run in families and are genetic and affect all ages.

 

Migraine is the third most common disease in the world with an estimated global prevalence of around 1 in 7 people. Migraine is more prevalent than diabetes, epilepsy and asthma combined. Chronic migraine affects approximately 2% of the world population.

Migraine affects three-times as many women as men, with this higher rate being most likely hormonally-driven. It is estimated that Migraine has 1 Billion known and reported cases worldwide. 

 

Till today no one is able to detect any cause of migraines. It is suspected that they result from abnormal activity in the brain. This can affect the way nerves communicate as well as the chemicals and blood vessels in the brain. Genetics may make someone more sensitive to the triggers that can cause migraines.

 

Hormonal changes in Women may experience migraine symptoms during menstruation, due to changing hormone levels. Emotional factors like Stress, depressionanxiety, excitement, and shock can trigger a migraine. Physical causes like Tiredness and insufficient sleep, shoulder or neck tension, poor posture, and physical overexertion have all been linked to migraines. Low blood sugar and jet lag. Alcohol and caffeine can contribute to triggering migraines. Some specific foods can also have this effect, including chocolate, cheese, citrus fruits, and foods containing the additive tyramine. Irregular mealtimes and dehydration have also been named as potential triggers. Some sleeping pills,  medications, and the combined contraceptive pill are possible triggers. Flickering screens, strong smells, second-hand smoke, and loud noises can set off a migraine. Stuffy rooms, temperature changes, and bright lights are also possible triggers.
